about

My work is concerned with the body and its environment, the contrasting ephemeral and insistent qualities of these entities and the tensions between them. I try to express the feeling within a particular space or moment and I want to pull the viewer into that. Often this is done intuitively with gestural mark making or figurative drawing. The drawing is then developed through print or making processes and often culminates in book forms.

I am interested in the act of perception, how this is influenced by internal and external forces and also how layering of meaning affects our experience. I enjoy the economy and challenge of using techniques to get the most out of a print block, to use the same block to make different pictures. I’m interested in the notion that different work can share the same root and in parallel how expressing the same idea in different ways can effect the communication.

I use the intimate scale of book forms to explore physical and emotional journeys and share feelings quietly. Recently I have been upscaling, working more directly with my responses to space and also making larger prints, showing the blocks alongside them and arranging them in space, like I might arrange images on pages in a book.
